As part of the third mission, universities are expected to contribute to solving societal challenges or crises, particularly in the area of gender equality and sustainability, and to anchor corresponding goals in their strategic documents. In this context, a pivotal question pertains to whether and to what extent universities perceive societal goals as their own or as externally imposed. Based on studies on resistance to gender equality in academia, it is reasonable to assume that goals deemed relevant by the university will encounter reduced resistance compared to those established for universities by higher-level authorities. This chapter explores the question of how Austrian universities formulate their goals in the field of gender equality and sustainability and to which extent the goals are formulated in a different manner. The analysis is based on the strategic documents approved by the 22 Austrian universities in 2020 and 2023. The concluding discussion focuses on lessons learned for gender equality policies.
