This chapter examines the Films Branch of the Board of TradeFilms Branch of the Board of Trade (and its successors) as an instrument of policy for the BritishUnited Kingdom (UK)/British film industry, beginning with the election of a progressive Labour government in 1945 and ending in 1979 when a new Conservative government triggered a broad retrenchment of state support for the sector. Between these dates, responsibility for administering film policy shifted between government departments, testifying to the government’s uncertainty about how best to accommodate film policy within the apparatus of state.
