In this final chapter, I consider the fate of the gender equality rule and the gender sensitivity of the Fiji Parliament. I do this by contextualising the conceptual framework introduced in Chapter 2 with the tensions uncovered between international and local norms of parliamentary democracy identified in Chapter 3 . I then turn to the fate of global efforts to gender sensitise parliaments in light of the Fijian experience, emphasising the need to embrace the inevitable messiness of political work rather than hiding behind so-called “technical capacity building” and the question of who is well placed to do this work. I suggest that critical feminist academic research—irrespective of whether it is undertaken by insiders or outsiders—remains vital in uncovering the political and intangible barriers to truly gender sensitive parliaments.
