This study examines the significance of Souq AlSaffarin, a renowned traditional marketplace in Old Baghdad, where a vibrant trade in copper products and other artistic goods has flourished within a historical and cultural context. The study establishes that Souq AlSaffarin serves as an important core of traditional skills that define the community, beyond being a center for business transactions. Additionally, the study explores the challenges confronting these traditional souqs, including the demand for modernization and competition from cheaper mass-produced goods available elsewhere. The methodology incorporates a combination of historical data, site observations, field surveys, and interviews with merchants, practitioners, and craftsmen residing near the souq center. The researchers quantitatively evaluated the global and local integration of the street network around this marketplace using DepthmapX software. The findings demonstrate the vital role of the traditional souq in fostering socio-economic development by supporting the livelihoods of various groups, including artisans and daily wage workers. Preserving this vibrant traditional marketplace necessitates shared responsibility among all stakeholders for its continued maintenance and cultural significance. The study offers recommendations on the best ways to preserve and revitalize these important cultural marketplaces. This research contributes to broader heritage conservation discourse, offering guidance for cultural entities, authorities, and relevant communities.
