Cities risk losing their unique identity as they go through changes and redevelopment. This makes preserving a city’s distinctive character, historical and cultural heritage, and local essence increasingly challenging. Novi Pazar is a prime example of a town that has undergone such transformation in modern times due to various factors. Its history mirrors the complex interplay between diverse political, religious, and cultural influences over the centuries. However, due to negligence caused by multiple factors, Novi Pazar is at risk of losing some of its most important identifiers—Stara Čaršija. Within the Republic of Serbia, Stara Čaršija is acknowledged as a spatial cultural-historical complex of considerable significance. The mission of preserving Stara Čaršija was an active idea even decades ago, with Jovan Nešković publishing the book Stara Čaršija u Novom Pazaru: Zaštita i revitalizacija in 1988. This paper aims to examine the formation, development, and character of Novi Pazar and the Stara čaršija complex up to the present day. It seeks to identify and recommend innovative solutions for preserving and restoring the distinctive architectural history, identity, and ambiental value of Stara Čaršija by analyzing and applying Nešković’s methodology to Stara Čaršija’s current state.
