In this chapter, the functions of paid professional tasks are identified. Paid professional tasks cover aspects which go far beyond, for example, providing financial security and guaranteeing physical survival or financing the social welfare system. Forty functions can be identified which paid professional tasks fulfill, like—among others—structuring daily life, providing purpose of life or identity for humans, serving as a source of self-confidence, and allowing oneself to grow into a society by enabling one to learn to coexist and to arrange oneself with other humans one might not have had the chance to choose freely and, this way, interconnect and become part of a society.
