The use of coercion has been part of the history of psychiatry from the beginning. This introductory chapter presents basic concepts, data and terminology related to coercion and human rights. This includes, among other things, various forms of coercion in psychiatric care, international data on the prevalence of coercion and, finally, terminological considerations on the designation of people with psychosocial problems that are not stigmatising and are not seen as devaluing by the people concerned.
