Living in the Rhythm of Nature: The Value of Nature Protection as an Ingredient of the Old European Heritage
摘要
Among the features of the Old European heritage which are deeply implanted in our psyche, kairos occupies a special place. The most significant connotation of kairos is experienced time as social construct and the energy flow released within the Self that makes kairos a navigator for an individual’s self-identification. This self-identification reflects the interaction of the body, the senses and the mind and, in the search of the Self for social interconnectivity, kairos becomes a measure for the relationship in the sphere of the between-us. Kairos in the best of its functioning was once present in the past, but it had been buried under the rubble of subsequent changes in society that turned out to have a hampering effect on the well-being of individuals such as social hierarchy, patriarchal dominance and extreme egocentric aspirations. Discovering kairos as an organizing principle of the Self in the communal network of a civilization from the far-distant past may be compared with the discovery of a plant the nutritious value of which for everybody’s diet and capacities for healing had been unknown and is secured by modern research results. Kairos is not only a term with a successful history but its benefits for the quality of living-standards are of timeless value which means that the renaissance of kairos in our days is likely to offer notable advantages for making modern society more humane. People in the past were privy of the advantages that the observation of kairos offered for their living-conditions, simply because they were aware to be themselves part of the natural world, to live in the pace of nature.
