The application and development of information technology are driving the innovation of higher education in China, with online teaching being the main method for future educational development. In university English teaching, task-based teaching is a common approach. However, with ongoing teaching reforms and continuous advancements in teaching technology, the drawbacks of this teaching model are gradually becoming apparent, such as insufficient classroom teaching time, lack of real-time student monitoring, and absence of effective evaluation mechanisms. SPOC (Small Private Online Course) is a new and efficient educational approach that adapts to the current Internet environment. It emphasizes students’ initiative, combining online and offline education methods. This approach not only effectively addresses the shortcomings of traditional task-based teaching methods but also provides an opportunity for university English teaching. In recent years, many domestic universities have been actively introducing information technology to improve online task-based teaching methods, meeting the current requirements of the teaching situation and exploring a beneficial new online teaching method for English courses. Based on this, this study constructs a high-efficiency online task-based teaching model for university English using SPOC information technology. Through experimental analysis, the results demonstrate that utilizing SPOC information technology can effectively enhance the efficiency of online task-based English teaching in universities and improve students’ core English competencies.
