The intention of the African Network for Evidence-to-Action in Disability (AfriNEAD) was to use research evidence to influence policy for the realization of the rights of persons with disabilities in the African region. It also aimed to enhance policy-informed research, and to play a role in questioning disability research methods and theories developed elsewhere, to promote research that is more context relevant and appropriate to address issues impacting persons with disabilities in Africa. The AfriNEAD conference was one of the three mechanisms used by AfriNEAD to facilitate generation of disability research evidence for the network. Seven international conferences have been presented by the network since its inauguration in 2007. The network use research thematic areas developed from the UNCRPD with the intention to align its research evidence with the UNCRPD, thus enhancing its policy-informed research. In this chapter, we will present the contribution of AfriNEAD to disability research since the inception of the network in 2007 and how this has contributed to disability research in the region. We present objectives established by the network to facilitate disability research and dissemination and implementation of research evidence. We also present countries that have participated in six AfriNEAD conferences and the number of research papers that were presented under the UNCRPD aligned research themes for each conference. These papers have assisted in the production of five special issues published in the African Journal of Disability (AJOD) and other disability journals. We conclude by suggesting that though there is still a lot to be done to strengthen disability research in Africa, there is also hope of increasingly supporting this research through the influence of AfriNEAD.
