Setting the Scene
摘要
The expository chapter sets the scene for a qualitative, longitudinal empirical study on teachers’ perceptions and pedagogical choices when using the government-endorsed Grades 7–9 English textbooks in Mauritius, which were conceptualised, designed and written in the context of the NYCBE curricular reform. It discusses the conceptualisation, design and writing of government-endorsed secondary textbooks to provide a thick description of the context underpinning this study. Drawing from Das’ notion of subaltern perspectives (Das, 2023), this chapter takes a step further by positioning the authors as subaltern’ English textbook writers, renamed minority textbook writers in this book, who have reclaimed their voice, agency and cognition as textbook writers, functioning within the parameters of a Small Island Developing State country as Mauritius.
