The western world is experiencing increasing longevity of its population. People are living longer and there are more older people. It is estimated that within the next twenty-five years the number of people aged 60 and over will have doubled. This has led to sustained public discussion about the social and health implications of the changing demographics of our societies. A series of studies have explored social representations of health and illness among older people. This chapter contrasts the more work-oriented older residents of Aberdeen in the north-east of Scotland with the more lifestyle-oriented baby-boomers of Canada. It concludes by considering a study of the social representations of older people held by health professionals in Germany. It also explores the socio-historic location of the different research studies.
