This study explores experts’ perceptions of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) speculative functions in supporting the design phase of the learning design (LD) cycle, focusing on five key functions: Co-Design Facilitator, Enquiry Analyst, Inspiration Hub, Design Tutor, and Prototyping Consultant. As part of an expert panel study, a workshop with 20 experts in AI, educational technologies and learning design was conducted to evaluate these functions’ added value, challenges, and potential integration in the LD process. Participants completed a questionnaire comprising both closed and open-ended questions to measure the perceived effectiveness of these functions, their limitations, and potential enhancements. These questions were designed to gather both quantitative data and qualitative insights. The collected data were analyzed through a combination of descriptive statistics for quantitative responses and thematic analysis for qualitative feedback. Results indicate varying perceptions: while functions like the Inspiration Hub and Prototyping Consultant are valued for creativity and efficiency, others, such as Enquiry Analyst and Co-Designer, face challenges related to contextual understanding, biases, and over-reliance. Participants highlighted the importance of aligning GenAI outputs with educational goals, providing adequate context, and maintaining critical oversight. Additionally, experts proposed new functions and applications for GenAI, emphasizing its potential in facilitating innovative and inclusive LD practices. This study highlights the need for tailored approaches to maximize GenAI’s utility in supporting teachers’ tasks.
