Developing the view that philosophy is acquisition of knowledge also requires answering the question: What is an explanation? A widely held view is that an explanation of a statement is a deduction of the statement from some other given statements, but this chapter argues that this view is not valid. Alternatively, the chapter argues that an explanation of a problem is a solution to the problem by the analytic method.
