Developing the view that philosophy is acquisition of knowledge also requires answering the question: What is the relation of knowledge to reality? There are different types of knowledge, each of which involves a different relation to reality, but a type of knowledge whose relation to reality is particularly relevant is scientific knowledge. The relation of scientific knowledge to reality is the primary theme of this chapter. This involves considering what the aim of science is. Since antiquity, a widely held view has been that the aim of science is truth, but this chapter argues that this view is not valid. Alternatively, the chapter argues that the aim of science is plausibility.
