Character Traits and the Mark of the Mental
摘要
Character traits are part of the mind, yet they don’t figure in discussions about the mark of the mental. The two most frequently considered suggestions for the mark of the mental are consciousness (or a related feature) and intentionality. Character traits have neither, but arguably they have an important relation to certain intentional states. Intentional states, in turn, are either conscious, or have an important relation to certain conscious states. Ultimately, there is no single mark of the mental, but consciousness is the core of the mind, and further states gain acceptance to the realm of mental features by having crucial relations to consciousness.
