The Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) introduces the mechanism of a regulatory sandbox in the AI field. This chapter analyses the provisions of the AIA and explores the concept, the attached rules and challenges regarding the setting up of, and the participation in AI regulatory sandboxes. It highlights the expected added value of AI regulatory sandboxes and identifies some of the remaining uncertainties, which should deserve further clarification in the future to maximise their benefits for innovators and regulators while supporting a dynamic and competitive AI industry in the EU.
