Material is added where it is needed in AM. It means more material than what is added is not required. In machining, more materials are required, i.e., a block bigger than a part is always required. This “more material” is saved when AM is used. This is material saving by default. In machining, “more material” will be saved only when the design of a part is similar to the design of a block, i.e., only when a finished product that does not require machining is brought to be machined. Therefore, for a machining process, the saving of a material and the action of machining do not go together. If it is said some machining saves material, it only implies that some machining wastes less material. Saving by default is not an advantage due to what AM does but due to what AM is. There is no effort done by AM to have this advantage. This saving is not an outcome over which AM has control, i.e., AM does not have an option to change it. Thus, there is no freedom to save in this case.
