In additive processes, such as sintering, casting, etc., materials are not needed more than what constitutes a part. Therefore, these processes should have the same advantage as AM has, but they do not have it because they do not have the design capability to save material. AM can change design to change the need where material is added—leading to lightweighting or a strategy to build. Material is saved because a part with a new design consists of less material than a part with an old design. This is due to an improvement in the old design, which is possible due to AM. When both parts weigh, the new part will be lighter than the old one, concluding that AM saves material. The conclusion would not have required any scrutiny if AM had not needed more material than that required by the new design. Or if all techniques other than AM had wasted much material while making the old design, it was obvious that AM saved material. But AM uses more material both before and during fabrication.
