Electrophoretic Deposition

Deposition of metal ions using salt solutions does not allow many types of materials to be deposited. A colloidal solution provides versatility in materials’ choice, as materials of any type, such as polymers, metals, or ceramics, can be deposited, as they are available in the form of colloids. These, unlike metal ions, can be of either charge, depending on the types of additives and solutions. These can be deposited on either electrode, which can be termed cathodic or anodic electrophoretic deposition. Voltage is applied across electrodes to drive these colloidal charged particles, while for ionic solution-based AM, voltage is applied to ionize the solution and drive ions. A solvent is chosen such that it will not ionize readily. If it ionizes, ions will change pH of the solution and disturb the stability of colloids, or ions will instead be deposited and interfere with the deposition of charged colloidal particles. The particles need to be smaller than one μm so their positions in the solution will not be affected by gravity. If particles are bigger, they will sediment.
