Liquid phase sintering (LPS) is a well-known binding mechanism in powder metallurgy. Taking the inspiration from powder metallurgy, this mechanism is used to explain the consolidation that happens in various powder-based AM techniques, such as powder bed fusion, binder jet AM, laser deposition process, etc. It is frequently used in laser-based powder bed techniques, where some powders are converted into liquid during laser treatment. The liquid flows and fills up the pores made by adjacent powders, causing the powders to be joined. Therefore, melting some rather than all powders is sufficient for the consolidation to occur.
