AM and Machining: Wall and Cavity
摘要
In machining, there are many tools to choose from to machine features of different sizes. For example, if a design consists of a thin and a thick wall, they are machined using a small and a big milling tool, respectively. In AM, an object can be found that can be the counterpart of a machining tool. For example, this object can be a beam in a beam-based AM. It can be a laser beam in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), an electron beam in electron beam powder bed fusion (EPBF), and a nozzle in jetting or extrusion deposition. This object in AM has to do all the jobs that many machining tools do. The laser beam thus makes both big and small walls, or both wide and narrow cavities, in LPBF, while the nozzle makes different walls and cavities in deposition process.
