Making a new product or verifying a new product design frequently is time-consuming through injection molding (IM). Since with a change in a digital file, a new mold needs to be fabricated first to make a new product. There is no requirement for a mold (an intermediate step) in AM, which allows AM to reach the product stage from the digital stage without going through the intermediate step. There is thus one step less in AM compared to IM. This makes AM fast—it is rapid manufacturing (RM). RM does not imply that AM is always faster than conventional manufacturing (CM) but is faster than only those CM that get delayed due to the intermediate step.
