AM has approximately 29 metallic powders, 15 metallic wires, five polymer powders, five polymer filaments, and five photopolymer resins. These numbers are constantly growing. Even though they are minuscule compared to thousands of materials in conventional manufacturing. A small number of polymer materials does not mean their use is less than that of metals. The industrial sale of plastics is 80%, while that of metals is only 6%. There are commercial metallic materials having different trade names. A total of 129 polymer materials, including 66 for powder bed fusion, are listed. But these are either the same basic AM materials or developed from them for a specific application or machine. These customized materials thus do not increase the number of basic AM materials.
