The Oxford dictionary gives the definition of a process as “a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.” A process is a set of tasks. AM processes are a combination of various steps in sequence. Such steps, for example, are what the materials are, how they are brought, and how they are converted. For example, three steps in powder bed fusion (PBF), which defines the process, are that materials are in the form of a powder, they are placed in the form of a bed, and they are converted by fusion. Processes that come under PBF follow the same steps but differ in the sources responsible for fusing them. For example, electron beam melting and selective laser melting (SLM) are two PBFs that differ because they are fused by e-beam and l-beam, respectively. Selective laser sintering (SLS) and SLM are two PBFs that are fused by the same type of applied energy source, i.e., l-beam, but differ because both use the l-beam for different purposes. SLS uses it for partial melting, while SLM uses it for full melting.
