Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can be the initial presentation in patients with undiagnosed diabetes. Prompt recognition and treatment to address hypovolemia, hyperglycemia, and electrolyte abnormalities are crucial to treating this life-threatening complication of diabetes. Symptoms may be due to the condition itself and/or intercurrent illness. After initiation of treatment, clinicians should keep a high index of suspicion and maintain cautious monitoring for cerebral edema if mental status changes occur. This simulation activity allows students to practice and apply medical knowledge to a diabetic ketoacidosis scenario, promoting deeper understanding, critical thinking, decision-making skills, and active engagement.
