Systemic shock is a life-threatening condition due to inadequate end-organ tissue oxygenation throughout the body. Obstructive shock is a category of shock that occurs as a result of extracardiac causes of decreased left ventricular cardiac output. Untreated, this condition can quickly be fatal. Rapid recognition of obstructive shock and immediate treatment to relieve the obstruction are critical to prevent loss of life. Student doctors must learn the key skills of obtaining a history, performing a physical exam, and generating a differential diagnosis. Simulation-based training allows student doctors to develop these skills in a safe environment. Simulating a clinical scenario such as cardiac tamponade can provide early opportunities to recognize abnormal imaging findings, practice the ultrasound FAST exam, and obtain hands-on pericardiocentesis procedural training in a controlled and supervised setting. Debrief meetings following the simulation encourage student doctors to discuss the key objectives, reflect on their skills and knowledge, and plan for future success.
