Energy Manipulation
摘要
Energy manipulating metamaterials (MMs) are engineered to tackle challenges like electromagnetic waves, impacts, noise, and heat through the strategic manipulation of material composition and geometry. A focus is placed on exploring the metamaterials created to solve problems in impact absorption, noise cancellation, heat management, and energy harvesting highlighting the customizability of material properties such as permittivity, permeability, and impedance to meet the needs of the applications. The underlying mechanisms of energy absorption are displayed for various engineering fields. Special attention is focused on how these properties are manipulated for electromagnetic and acoustic applications which are critical in reducing noise and managing electromagnetic interference in a range of settings. Mechanical absorption capabilities are covered, detailing the management of kinetic energies from impacts and vibrations. Thermal absorption is also explored, demonstrating how MMs can effectively manage heat through enhanced thermal barriers and conductive pathways. These sections also cover discussions of converting energy either through piezoelectric means or thermophotovoltaics to add multifunctionality to the material and to reduce wasted energy in a system. Additionally, metamaterials are a driving force in communications, including the use of meta-antennas for high frequency and multiband data transmission, as well as driving the flow of energy asymmetrically through phononic crystals. Lastly, a discussion is presented on the prospects of these energy manipulating materials highlighting advanced manufacturing techniques used in their development. This review underscores the prospects of energy manipulating materials, highlighting their versatility and the advanced manufacturing techniques pivotal in their development.
