This chapter describes some of the main contributions of Donald Winnicott to the understanding of children’s development, emotional difficulties and his model of the therapeutic consultation. Winnicott described transitional objects and transitional phenomena as an “in between space” where a child could be between reality and fantasy. Winnicott emphasized the importance of the first session as a moment where there is a “sacred moment” in which the “knot” of the child and family difficulties come to the fore. He described several developmental accomplishments like the capacity to be alone, achieving a true self, and feeling emotionally secure internally. The “fear of breakdown” and the development of a false self are consequences of problems in these developmental achievements.

摘要
