This chapter discusses Thornton’s Hoax comicHoax Psychosis Blues, which explores her and her brother’s experiences with his schizophreniaSchizophrenia. The comic is based on poems that Thornton and her brother collaborated on. The chapter argues that, despite schizophrenia’s profound effects, neither current medical understandings nor post-structural aesthetics are adequate for treating it. Yet, by leveraging the powerful expressive potential of the comics form, Thornton’s work demonstrates that the stigmatization of schizophreniaSchizophrenia can be seen as a symptom of the condition itself, contributing to its appearance as untreatable. Moreover, buoyed by recent neuroscientific scholarship on schizophreniaSchizophrenia as a time disorderTime disorder, this chapter combines such insights with aesthetic scholarship and literary analysis to examine Thornton and her brother’s altered phenomenological experiences of time. This expands the understanding of a schizophrenic experience of time by focusing attention on the fragmentation of the story across narrative perspectives, media forms, words, images, art styles and the experiences of those suffering from schizophreniaSchizophrenia alongside their interlocutors who bear with them.
