The memoirMemoir primarily uses simple, vulnerable, flat, black-and-white hand-drawn images and few words. Through these Wong shows how postpartum depressionDepressionpostpartum depression consumes and disorientates her after the traumatic disruption of her life, as the boundaries of her body are breached by the birth of her first child. The comic focuses on the phenomenological experience of a dislocated and ‘monumental’ stillness in time, which at first even eclipses the relentless and mundane cyclical activities of new motherhood. Wong invites her reader’s/viewer’s participation using spiral visual markers of intertextuality that allude to poetryPoetry and musicMusic, thereby reaching outside of the time of the text through braidingBraiding.
