This chapter analyses Chipkin and Tavassoli’s Eyes Too Dry, a self-conscious, collaboratively created graphic memoirMemoir about depressionDepression within a queer friendship. Graphic medicineGraphic medicine’s interdisciplinary lens enables a focus on the interwoven impacts of context, content, formal features and the authors’ creative processes, thus revealing a portrayal of the phenomenological experiences of depressionDepression and disassociationDisassociation from a range of subjective perspectives. Recurring depictions of disassociationDisassociation are explored using devices of dispersed narrative authority in various visual and verbal narratorsVerbal narrator, as these connect numerous versions of the self together across time. These depictions are shown to replicate the authors’ phenomenological experience of the isolating quality of ‘queer time’Time‘queer time’ (Freeman et al. 2010). The reader/viewer is able to participate in this altered experience of time as they reconstruct the several moments of time presented simultaneously to activate the ‘phatic space’Phatic space via haptic images, embodied writing and directed touch.
