Between Sachlichkeit and Sentimentality: The Medial Qualities of Early Danish Music Radio Programming
摘要
This chapter develops a more detailed view of Neue Sachlichkeit as a field of negotiations between tradition and modernity, contrasting Sachlichkeit with sentimentality and understanding the dyad as a structure of feeling (Williams). Instead of having a series of works, tunes, or composers as centrepieces, it demonstrates how the negotiations were performed in relation to radio, the new mass medium par excellence of that age. As examples, it refers to a few cases related to the Danish national radio, two of them dealing with question of popular music as sachlich and a third discussing the production of music radio programmes as an art form. The conclusion is that Neue Sachlichkeit when related to music radio lives within the tensions between Sachlichkeit and sentimentality (modernity and tradition) as demonstrated by the radio examples which show how the two were entangled in various ways.
