This chapter explores the role of female-centered murals in reshaping urban narratives in the South Bronx. These murals embody performative urbanism, where art and social activism intersect to challenge traditional urban landscapes and amplify the voices of women within these spaces. Melis emphasizes that the murals transcend their visual appeal by representing resilience, empowerment, and the struggles of women within marginalized communities. Through vibrant expressions, these murals transform public spaces into arenas of social advocacy, addressing issues such as gender equality and safety. In particular, the South Bronx’s historical and cultural context of economic hardship, community activism, and cultural creativity highlights the murals’ role in advocating for social justice and community identity. Utilizing a methodology combining photography and qualitative research, this study documents how female-themed murals foster critical reflection on urban inclusivity, contributing to a renewed understanding of urban spaces that accommodate the experiences and identities of women and marginalized voices.
