Tourism is a social phenomenon, and coordinated efforts of social networks are central to achieving sustainable tourism. Research indicates that social capital moderates the relationship between tourism and sustainable development. The ability of all relevant stakeholders to secure benefits by continuous and informed participation in social networks is vital to obtaining synergistic benefits. The study captures the perceptions of one of the key stakeholders—local residents—on the enabling role of versatile, often disruptive, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in building social capital for sustainable tourism in the Sultanate of Oman. One hundred and eight residents from Muscat selected through a purposive sampling method were interviewed. Results indicate that sustainable tourism can be enhanced by leveraging the relational dimension of social capital through sharing experiences, ideas, and resources facilitated by AI. Respondents opine that collaboration among multiple players can be significantly improved through AI tools, leading to high social capital levels and pro-sustainable behaviors. These results will have implications for policy decisions and inform future research.

One hundred and eight residents from Muscat selected through a purposive sampling method were interviewed. Results indicate that sustainable tourism can be enhanced by leveraging the relational dimension of social capital through sharing experiences, ideas, and resources facilitated by AI.
