Volume I of the three-volume series Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade (Transforming Education, Research and Engagement) examines how education, curriculum development, and research contribute to advancing Ocean Literacy and strengthening society’s connection to the Ocean. Across 21 chapters, over 90 authors from 19 countries present diverse geographic, disciplinary, and institutional perspectives, highlighting innovative educational models, teacher training programs, national curricula, and community-based initiatives that expand Ocean Literacy across civil society. Collectively, these contributions demonstrate that Ocean Literacy is not only a foundational element of science education, but also a catalyst of sustainability, inclusivity, and informed action within the framework of the Ocean Decade. By amplifying underrepresented voices, engaging marginalized communities, and integrating Indigenous and local knowledge systems, the volume illustrates how Ocean Literacy supports more equitable and sustainable decision-making. Many chapters further underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration across scientific and educational domains, as well as transdisciplinary approaches that engage communities, policymakers, and civil society in co-creating sustainable solutions.

摘要
