The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), the Ocean Decade, presents an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen Ocean Literacy worldwide. This chapter introduces Ocean Literacy: The Foundation for the Success of the Ocean Decade, a three-volume collection endorsed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) as an official Ocean Decade Activity. The series showcases global efforts to build an Ocean-literate society by bridging education, innovation, engagement, and collaboration. Volume I focuses on transforming education, research, and engagement to lay the foundation for strengthening Ocean Literacy in formal and informal education settings. Volume II emphasizes the role of communities, the Sustainable Blue Economy, and the Arts in promoting sustainable Ocean engagement. Volume III explores how communication, technology, and global initiatives can accelerate impact. Across all three volumes, the series emphasizes the critical role of Ocean Literacy in addressing the Ocean Decade’s societal outcomes and challenge areas, especially Challenge 10: Restore Society’s Relationship with the Ocean, and calls for bridging the gap between scientific knowledge, public understanding, and collective action. Drawing on global case studies and research-based strategies, the collection underscores the transformative power of Ocean Literacy in shaping a more sustainable future. This opening chapter highlights interdisciplinary learning, experiential education, and inclusive approaches, including Indigenous knowledge systems, that promote educational innovation and equity. It frames Ocean Literacy as a key driver for science-informed decision-making, deeper Ocean engagement, and enhanced global collaboration in advancing Ocean sustainability.
