Chapter 3: “Divide and Rule”: The Islamists and Inequality in Sudan
摘要
This chapter analyses the role of the Islamists in creating and deepening inequalities in Sudan. A key argument is that the policies of the Islamists not only created and entrenched inequality in Sudan but also contributed to their own downfall. The objective is to analyse the policies of the Islamists and how these policies entrenched inequality in Sudan. The analysis in the chapter focuses on the internal rifts within the Islamists and shows that the Islamists are not immune to fission; that they fell victims to the divisions they wreaked in other political and social entities in Sudan. The Islamic movement used religion to justify its seizure of power, fighting enemies of God and reforming the society, but it ended up in violence, dividing the country and fostering corruption and civil war. When Al-Bashir was ousted in 2019, hopes were high that the era of injustice and inequality was over, but apparently the road to equality is still long. The alliance between the military and the Islamists is still deep rooted and judging by the military coup of October 2021 and the April 2023 war, it can be said that the role of the military in deepening the crisis in Sudan is no less significant than that of the Islamists.
