Chapter 13: The Martyrs of the December Revolution: A New Grassroots Movement and a Collective Voice for Transitional Justice
摘要
This chapter addresses the issue of justice for the martyrs of the December Revolution, with a particular focus on the events and developments that took place during the transitional period from 2019 to 2023, up to the outbreak of armed conflict on 15 April 2023. Martyrs of the revolution, their families, and other victims were killed or injured or disappeared during the peaceful protests that led to the regime change in Sudan and the overthrow of Omar Al-Bashir’s regime. Hundreds of people paid with their lives for the revolution after it began on December 2018. This chapter highlights the fact that despite the magnitude of the violence and the killing of peaceful protesters, the rights of victims and their families seeking justice and the constant calls for accountability were largely ignored during the transitional period. Nevertheless, unlike in previous periods in the history of Sudanese revolutions, as in 1964 and 1985, for example, the December Revolution enabled grassroots movements and the martyrs’ families to clearly articulate their vision and unite around the issue of justice, which was central to the martyrs’ families in their endeavour to achieve the revolution’s justice agenda.
