Chapter 10: Beyond Ethnicity and Religion: The Colonial and Postcolonial Legacy of Capitalist Expansion in Eastern Sudan During the Revolution and the Counter-Revolution
摘要
Based on ethnographic data collected between 2017 and 2022, the chapter presents an analysis of socio-political dynamics in Eastern Sudan during the period of December Revolution. It tackles the multiple inequalities that characterise the history and present of the Eastern region, despite it received less attention concerning the issue of “marginalisation”, trying to link them to the positions manifested during the recent revolutionary process. It also fosters a long-term vision of how capitalist expansion shaped local group alliances, conflicts, and their relation to the State since British colonisation up to the Ingaz period, with a central role of “native policies” aimed at using knowledge for categorising and stratifying these groups according to criteria of ethnic, tribal, or religious affiliations.
