Liver transplant remains the treatment of choice for those dying from the complications of chronic liver disease. Long-term survival of liver transplant recipients is excellent, and primary care providers are essential to their overall management. Primary care providers are often the first point of health care contact for liver transplant recipients, necessitating familiarity with a range of issues related to transplantation and immunosuppression. We review common post-liver transplant concerns encountered in adult primary care, including surgical sequelae, evaluation of abnormal liver tests, metabolic disease and obesity, medication management, contraception and fertility, and mental health and substance use disorders.
