There are unique considerations in the preventive medical care of solid organ transplant recipients due to the increased risk of systemic disease in the context of chronic immunosuppressive medication and associated behavioral health diagnoses related to the process of organ transplantation. It is important that primary care providers are aware of these risks to provide individualized, patient-centered care as well as to support population-based care for solid organ transplant recipients. In this chapter, we review important considerations in preventive care for solid organ transplant recipients. We highlight screening recommendations for conditions that are leading causes of mortality in solid organ transplant recipients, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, as well as conditions that lead to significant morbidity, such as diabetes and osteoporosis. We also discuss specific considerations for immunizations, travel medicine, and safe living practices. Finally, we review incidence and screening recommendations for behavioral health diagnoses and substance use.
