“Talkin’ ’Bout My Generation”: The Role of Music in Italian Youth Television Series
摘要
Music has often been a powerful tool of identification for Italy’s youth, and media platforms such as Netflix have strategically capitalised on those aspects. In this essay, I first explore the role of professional figures involved in the process of selecting the music featured in a series’ soundtrack. Subsequently, I focus on three TV series as case studies where music is strategically used to communicate specific messages. Specifically, I show how Generazione 56k (2021) and Summertime (2020-2022) use music to evoke feelings of nostalgia and melancholia, while the upbeat, female-led songs in Guida astrologica per cuori infranti (2021-2022) emphasize the protagonist’s search for emotional emancipation.
