The Pathos of Transnationalism: Exploring the Touristic Gaze in Anna
摘要
In a globalised world where audiovisual content circulates transnationally, the TV industry demands that products negotiate global aesthetics and localised narratives following the principle of glocalisation. The aesthetically mediated exhibition of Sicily through the push and pull of the touristic gaze permeates the TV series Anna (2021) with a sense of authenticity that reflects that negotiation. This chapter argues that in a dystopian reality where civilisation vanishes with the death of adults, the Sicilian teenager Anna explores an unfamiliar land, playing both the roles of the local and ethnographer. The result is an exotic tale of the Other able to appeal to the deterritorialised audiences of contemporary global television.
