The series Mare fuori/The Sea Beyond (2020–), co-produced by Rai Fiction and Picomedia and originated and co-written by Cristiana Farina, has been one of Italian serial television’s biggest phenomena in recent years. Premiering on Raidue in late September 2020, the series’ popularity exploded with its third season, which aired in February 2023, and achieved a record number of views on Rai’s VOD platform, RaiPlay. With Season Five broadcast in March 2025, this “major pop culture phenomenon” (Vivarelli 2023) has, however, not yet received much scholarly attention. The series, set in an institution for young offenders in Naples, is notable for its appeal far beyond Rai’s typical older audience demographic, but also because it has become part of a more extended transmedia universe of music, fashion, theatre, and tourism. The series will be discussed here in relation to this web of media activities, as well as some of the fan-produced media around the show, as exemplifying both transmedia storytelling and transmedia promotion.
