Casa Surace’s Engagement with Southern Youth and National Success Among Young Italians

Despite the continued phenomenon of South-to-North migration within Italy, it hardly ever appears as a subject in Italian television or cinema. By contrast, videos produced by the social media accounts (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube) of Casa Surace on the subject proliferate online. With their “terroni fuori sede” sketches, the web producers Casa Surace attract millions of views, drawing attention to a particular Italian youth experience: that of students living away from home (most often moving from South to North). This chapter explores and analyses the channels and the most viewed videos published by the Casa Surace YouTubers since 2015. It identifies the distinctive traits of Casa Surace’s production, focusing on content, performance, and aesthetics; their funny body language, use of regional accents and slang are some of the distinguishing features of these YouTubers that recall traditional Italian comedy. The chapter will be enriched by the answers of Italian “fuorisede/off-site” students themselves, responding to this new representation of Italian youth through an online questionnaire.
