From 2016 to 2021, the nation faltered and education was at the center of debate. What content was being taught, how teachers presented information, and the intellectual endeavors of the professorate were all points of debate in the public sphere. This public debate put education in the crosshairs of national socio-political upheaval, causing fissures in policy and practice at every level of US education. From 2021 to 2024, there were attempts to redefine the value of higher education in a democracy as President Biden worked to help more individuals attend college, and remove financial barriers. Facing formidable challenges as a result of partisan division, policies were not implemented, and higher education remained a point of criticism for political utility. With the 2024 election cycle and the first months of the new administration in 2025, higher education stands as one of the most contested social institutions in the US. The new administration is actively targeting colleges and universities, seeking to tarnish the reputation of institutions, and devaluing the importance of higher learning in the modern world. A crisis is underway, one that threatens the very foundations of American democracy.
