The first decade of the twenty-first century was marred with tragedy and challenge. From the terrorist attacks of 9/11 to the Great Recession rooted in 2008, the US was not short on crisis. Although higher education could not be directly blamed for either of these devastating events, the role of higher education in preventing such crises was a point of national concern. Through legislation, the USA PATRIOT Act, and the Spellings Commission Report, A Test of Leadership: Charting the Future of U.S. Higher Education, the responsibility of individuals in attaining college degrees, and the impetus for institutions to reconsider privacy practices, established the trajectory of colleges and universities in this new world order.
