The launch of Sputnik in the fall of 1957 created a panic in the US: Fear that the US had lost the Space Race, and that Russia would win the Cold War. Education was blamed for falling behind in science and technology, and the attention turned to what education could do to make up for this failure. The National Defense Education Act passed in 1958 as a means to promote technological discovery and science education. Whether the crisis of Sputnik was truly something to fear or a fabricated crisis is less important than the outcome of the National Defense Education Act for higher education: Direct federal support for student aid and at the same time, a model for condemning higher education when a national goal is not attained.
