Chapter 1 provides an introduction for this book, which broadly explores the state of American computer crime investigations. Involved is an examination of the characteristics of investigators, the development of computer crime units and task force programs, the processes involved in these investigations, and the culture of computer crime investigations. Also considered are the technological, economic, political, and cultural contexts that shape and structure computer crime investigations, units, and task forces. It adopts a more sociological approach to the study of computer crime policing by tracing connections between the individual and organizational levels of analysis to the macro-structural. In other words, it situates computer crime policing in the “big picture” of technological change, the political economic of internet platforms, the transformation of “force” in the internet age, and related matters. This chapter provides the foundational context for understanding contemporary computer crime policing and previews the subsequent chapters.
